  • Not cancer, but LCIS indicates a higher risk of eventually developing breast cancer some time down the road. Often requires close follow-up and sometimes preventive intervention.

  • An aggressive subtype missing three typical receptors (ER, PR, HER2). Requires a unique treatment that involves surgery, chemo, and/or immunotherapy.

  • Characterized by overexpression of the HER2 protein, which promotes cancer growth. Targeted therapy is often effective when used with surgery.

  • A rare, aggressive form of cancer that causes swelling, redness, and heat. Requires immediate treatment and the administration of multiple therapies.

  • While rare, breast cancer can develop in men, who may have cancer in the form of a mass, nipple discharge, or change in the skin. Requires urgent treatment and diagnosis.

  • Cancer recurrence after some type of treatment. Local, regional, or metastatic—requires updated and specialized management.

  • A rare form of breast cancer that begins in the ducts and spreads to the nipple. Symptoms and signs include flaking, itching, or reddening of the nipple skin.

  • Cancer that has spread from the breast and surrounding lymph nodes to other organs like the bones, liver, lungs, or brain. Treated with supportive care and systemic therapies.

  • Rare fibroepithelial tumors that are benign or malignant. They develop rapidly and may require surgical excision with free margins.

  • An extremely rare group of cancers that develop in the connective tissue of the breast, not the ducts or lobules. Requires special surgical and oncologic treatment.

  • Rare form of breast cancer with a papillary (finger-like) growth pattern, typically discovered by biopsy. Typically has an excellent prognosis.

  • Rare type with clear borders and less aggressive overall course. Typically triple-negative but more treatment-sensitive than other TNBCs.

  • Slow-growing, well-differentiated breast cancer with an excellent prognosis. Frequently found by routine annual mammograms.

  • A uncommon invasive breast cancer made up of mucus-secreting tumor cells. Typically less aggressive and has favorable prognosis.

  • Needs to be treated gently, with a multidisciplinary approach, in order to spare both mother and fetus. Treatment regimen may include surgery and delay chemotherapy until after childbirth.

Your Guide to Breast Cancer Diagnosis

What Tests Might Be Needed?

Understanding your diagnosis is the first step to reclaiming your health. At Al Riaz Health Services, we prioritize clear communication and expert guidance to help patients feel informed and empowered. Not all tests are needed for everyone, but here's a guide to the most common diagnostic tools used in breast oncology.

  • Checking a Small Piece of Tissue

    What is it?
A biopsy is when we take a tiny bit of tissue—like from a lump or spot—to look at closely.

    Why do we do it?
It’s the best way to know for sure if cancer is there, what kind it is, and how fast it might grow.

    How does it happen?
The doctor might use a needle to grab the sample, make a small cut, or use a thin tube with a camera (like for your stomach or lungs). We numb the area so it’s not painful, then send the tissue to a lab where experts check it under a microscope.

    How long does it take?
The test itself takes 15 minutes to an hour. Results come back in 3-7 days.

    Will it hurt?
You might feel a quick pinch or some pressure, but the numbing helps a lot. Afterward, it might feel sore, like a bruise, for a day or two.

    What else should I know?
It’s a big step to getting clear answers—worth it for peace of mind!

  • Looking for Clues in Your Blood

    What are they?
A simple check of your blood to spot cancer signs.

    Why do we do them?
They find hints—like special proteins or cell changes—that show if cancer’s there or how it’s behaving. They also check your overall health.

    How do they happen?
A nurse uses a small needle to take blood from your arm. The lab looks for things like tumor markers or unusual cell counts.

    How long do they take?
The poke takes 5 minutes. Results come in a few hours to 3 days.

    Will it hurt?
Just a quick sting—like a mosquito bite. It’s over fast!

    What else should I know?
It’s an easy way to keep track without big procedures.

  • Exploring Your Cancer’s DNA

    What is it?
A test to check the DNA in your cancer or blood.

    Why do we do it?
It finds changes in the cancer that help us pick the best treatments—like medicines made just for you. It can also tell if cancer runs in your family.

    How does it happen?
We use tissue from a biopsy or sometimes just blood (called a liquid biopsy). A lab studies the DNA for clues.

    How long does it take?
No extra time for you—it’s all lab work. Results take 1-3 weeks.

    Will it hurt?
No pain if it’s from a past biopsy. If it’s blood, it’s just another quick draw.

    What else should I know?
It’s like a secret weapon to fight your cancer smarter!

  • Screening Your Breasts

    What is it?
An X-ray of your breasts (for women, sometimes men).

    Why do we do it?
To find breast cancer early, even before you feel a lump.

    How does it happen?
Your breast is pressed between two plates for a quick picture.

    How long does it take?
15-20 minutes. Results in a few days.

    Will it hurt?
It’s tight and uncomfortable for a moment, but not painful.

    What else should I know?
It’s a key tool for catching breast cancer fast!

  • Sound Waves for Lump Detection

    What is it?
A non-invasive imaging tool using sound waves to evaluate lumps.

    Why do we do it?
To distinguish solid masses from fluid-filled cysts.

    How does it happen?
A gel and handheld device (transducer) are used on the breast.

    How long does it take?
    15–30 minutes.

    Will it hurt?
    No pain—completely safe.

    What else should I know?
Helpful when mammogram results are unclear.

  • Magnetic Scan for High-Risk Patients

    What is it?
A powerful imaging tool using magnets to create detailed pictures.

    Why do we do it?
Used in high-risk patients or for better visualization of complex cases.

    How does it happen?
The patient lies face-down; contrast dye may be used.

    How long does it take?
    30–60 minutes.

    Will it hurt?
No pain, but some may feel claustrophobic.

    What else should I know?
Often used with mammograms for complete diagnosis.

  • 3D Breast Imaging

    What is it?
An advanced form of mammography creating 3D breast images.

    Why do we do it?
To improve cancer detection and reduce false positives.

    How does it happen?
Multiple X-ray images taken from different angles.

    How long does it take?
    15–20 minutes.

    Will it hurt?
    Similar to a traditional mammogram.

    What else should I know?
Especially beneficial for women with dense breast tissue.

  • Metastasis Check

    What is it?
A combination of Positron Emission Tomography and CT imaging.

    Why do we do it?
To detect the spread of cancer to other parts of the body.

    How does it happen?
A radioactive tracer is injected, and whole-body imaging is done.

    How long does it take?
    1–2 hours.

    Will it hurt?
No pain; may feel cold sensation from injection.

    What else should I know?
Useful in staging and treatment planning.

  • Tumor Receptor Testing

    What is it?
Lab tests on tumor samples to check hormone and HER2 receptor status.

    Why do we do it?
    To determine targeted treatment strategies.

    How does it happen?
    Done after biopsy or surgery.

    How long does it take?
    3–5 days.

    Will it hurt?
No additional pain—uses existing tissue sample.

    What else should I know?
Results decide eligibility for hormone and targeted therapies.
